Loyalty is a fault

Terron believed in the ways of old and loyalty was the foundation of everything he believed in. There was no boundaries or limits to what he would do for his comrades. To find out those feelings weren’t mutual was one of the most disappointing experiences he would ever live through. 
Question:
Does loyalty have an expiration date?
Is it your fault if you’re loyal to the wrong people or things?
Should people pay for their disloyalty?
